World is crazier and more of it than we think,
Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion
A tangerine and spit the pips and feel
The drunkenness of things being various.
Louis Macneice, 'Snow'
Across is a hybrid of formal and found portraiture. The frames suggested by pedestrian crossings become stages where people form heroic tableaux, consult their devices, appear to daydream, or stare into the lens with what we might interpret as the suspicion with which all photographers should be regarded.
These images celebrate our variety as a species and, in the stand-off between photographer and subject, suggest an unease in making photographs of people without their explicit consent.
Across is being developed as an exhibition of large format prints.
